What AustriaMap is

AustriaMap is an independent, non-commercial project that brings together openly licensed geographic data about Austria. The goal is to make it easy for anyone, whether a resident, researcher, developer, or curious visitor, to explore Austrian geography without navigating dozens of government portals.

Every federal state has its own dedicated page with administrative boundaries, elevation profiles, major settlements, transport connections, and key facts drawn from public datasets. We do not produce or own any of the underlying geographic data. We aggregate, process, and present it.

Where the data comes from

The geographic backbone of AustriaMap comes from OpenStreetMap ((C) OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). Administrative boundaries and statistical data are sourced from BEV ((C) BEV, CC BY 4.0), Statistik Austria, and the Austrian open data portal data.gv.at under the applicable open-government licences.

How it is built

AustriaMap runs on Python and Flask, with geographic data stored and queried via PostGIS. Map tiles are served by the OpenStreetMap tile network. The site is designed to be fast, accessible, and usable without JavaScript for all core content.

No API and no accounts

AustriaMap is a read-only reference site. There is no public API, no user accounts, and no paid features. If you need raw geographic data, the original sources on our data-sources page are the right place to start. Data Sources.
